Steel City Tool Works 35990C 10-Inch Contractor Table Saw with Cast Iron Table Top
The job of review writing is made easy when you can call upon the experience and knowledge of an expert in the field. My neighbor just happens to be a professional contractor who makes use of table saws each and every day. Whenever he either buys or makes use of a new one he gives me a detailed run down on what he thinks of it. This set up works perfectly because although I use my table saw for my own small projects, I don’t use them for my living and anyone who does that will soon tire of using sub-standard machinery.
We recently looked at jobsite table saws and reviewed the excellent Bosch 4100DG-09 Worksite Table Saw. Last week we finally got the chance to look at contractor saws and we decided that there were two things that make the Steel City Tool Works 35990C Table Saw the best contractor table saw for the money. The first is that the overall quality and performance of this saw is excellent. The second is the value for money as there are some great deals available at the moment. I hope you find my full review below, useful.
- Overall good, robust and safe design
- Very quiet and stable operation
- Casters make it easily maneuverable
- Seamless cast iron table top provides the best environment during operation
- The precision-machined cast iron trunions are mounted to the top cabinet to ensure perfect blade alignment, increased stability and ease of adjustment
- Ready to use right after assembly
Excellent Performance – Quiet and Smooth to Operate
In my reviews I normally deal with build quality and installation first but that would do the performance of the Steel City Tool Works 35990C 10-Inch Contractor Table Saw and injustice. What you the reader and potential buyer really wants to know is how does it cut? You might think that with a 1 1/2 HP motor it might struggle to cut through some of the larger pieces but you really wouldn’t notice the difference between this and a table saw with a 3HP motor for example. I would say that the performance leaves nothing to be desired, I think it is on a par with a good cabinet saw, it’s that good. Initial tests with some cherry, maple and some simple plywood left me very impressed as it cut through all without the slightest problem. When tried with a Dewalt thin-kerf general purpose blade, it will cut through 2 1/2-inch red oak as if it is not there.
The other thing that strikes me is how quiet this table saw is. One of the reasons is definitely the way it is so robust and stable. It is vibration-free as it cuts.
Easy to Assemble – But Follow the Diagrams
Let me say up front that if you follow the diagrams, which are excellent, you will have no problems. Steel City has gone to the trouble of numbering and separating the parts for each step in separate bags. While every product has its pros and cons, there is only one thing against this table saw and that is the quality of the written instructions. As mentioned, with all the pieces neatly cataloged in the instruction manual it is easy to make out which parts to use in each step. The motor and belt already comes mounted inside the cabinet which helps to make assembly even easier.
A big plus for this saw is the fact that it is ready to use straight after assembly. You will only need to set the fence measurement at zero and adjust the blade to 90 degrees. The two piece fence operates very well and is easy to use as it glides smoothly and locks tightly.
High Quality Construction
In this price range you will probably be comparing the Steel City vs. the Jet contractor table saw. If you are ever able to see them side by side you will immediately see how substantial this Steel City contractor saw is. In comparison the Jet lacks stability due to its weak legs and the fence is not up to the standard you would expect at this price.
I’ve heard it say that the Steel City Tool Works 35990C is built like a tank. I think that is a compliment to its strength and durability. However, despite its weight it is easy to move around the workshop because of the built in casters. This means it is easy to move out of the way when it’s not being used.
The overall unit is built to an extremely high quality of construction. The cast iron table is perfectly flat, including across the main to the wings. Whilst the miter gauge is standard, it is good nonetheless. You will even notice that the handwheels are high quality with no slip or rock.
Steel City Tool Works 35990C Has Some Excellent Features
There are several features that would make you choose this table saw, such as the cast iron extension wings, the cabinet mounted trunnions and the built in mobile base. The trunnion design is very clever and extremely heavy duty. A feature of the overall quality is that the fence and rails are made of square tube steel instead of aluminum. Don’t be put off by the split rail, it is well designed, which is not something you say about some other split rail fences I’ve seen.
Overall I have no hesitation at all in recommending this contractor table saw…Buy Steel City Tool Works 35990C
